{"id":179,"date":"2010-05-03T09:43:50","date_gmt":"2010-05-03T17:43:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.juliebiuso.com\/blog\/?p=179"},"modified":"2010-05-03T09:45:55","modified_gmt":"2010-05-03T17:45:55","slug":"tasting-australia-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juliebiuso.com\/blog\/2010\/05\/tasting-australia-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Tasting Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, still in the Barossa Valley (South Australia), we called in to the Apex Bakery in Elizabeth Street, Tanunda, because we\u2019d heard heaps about the Fechner brothers and their bread made the good old-fashioned way with unbleached flour, no sugars and no emulsifiers. The wood fired oven was built in 1924 and is Australia\u2019s longest continually fired oven. It\u2019s never gone out!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brian (Nipper) Fechner proudly standing in front of his wood fired oven at the Apex Bakery<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.juliebiuso.com\/images\/blog\/050310_4.jpg\" alt=\"Brian (Nipper) Fechner proudly standing in front of his wood fired oven at the Apex Bakery\" style=\"padding:40px;\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Vegetable pasties going in the oven to cook<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.juliebiuso.com\/images\/blog\/050310_5.jpg\" alt=\"Vegetable pasties going in the oven to cook\" style=\"padding:40px;\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>This was preceded by a visit to the Barossa Farmer\u2019s Market, held every Saturday in the Vintners Sheds<\/strong> <a href=\"mailto:info@barossafarmersmarket.com\">info@barossafarmersmarket.com<\/a><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.juliebiuso.com\/images\/blog\/050310_3.jpg\" alt=\"Barossa Farmer\u2019s Market\" style=\"padding:40px;\"><\/p>\n<p>Here you\u2019ll find locally made breads, cheeses, sauces, pickles and condiments and locally grown olives, fruits and vegetables. The range of apple varieties was impressive and the little garlic seeds, from matured garlic flowers (just let the plants go to flower then seed) were a revelation. Hot and spicy and very more-ish!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sour dough bread<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.juliebiuso.com\/images\/blog\/050310_2.jpg\" alt=\"Sour dough bread\" style=\"padding:40px;\"><\/p>\n<p>And, one last pic \u2013 me at dinner with Paul Mercurio, star of stage and screen, including the movie Strictly Ballroom and television series Dancing with the Stars, at dinner at Yalumba Winery, Australia\u2019s oldest family-owned winery in Eden Valley (close to Barossa Valley), South Australia.
